The course from which I learned the most was my capstone. It took everything I had learned and brought it all together into one place. It was not until the capstone course that everything came full circle and all the puzzle pieces were in place to see the full picture.
From stalled to soaring: How JetBlue Scholars reignited a career
After hitting a standstill in his career journey, this long-time crewmember turned to JetBlue Scholars as his launchpad for new possibilities. With the guidance of a supportive coach (part mentor, part hype squad), he not only completed his degree but sharpened his time management skills he now uses daily in his current role. Navigating online learning for the first time, he embraced tech tools, built systems to stay on track, and turned personal growth into professional momentum. Today, Corey is on a mission to uplift fellow crewmembers, using his experience to shape the future one calendar reminder at a time.
What motivated you to join the JetBlue Scholars program, and how has it impacted your career? At the time I was stagnant in my career at JetBlue and was looking for the next big adventure. I had applied for different positions but had no success in achieving any of them. That motivated me to get involved with JetBlue Scholars and finish my degree.
How did the JetBlue Scholars coach contribute to your success? Your coach is everything through the JetBlue Scholars process. They are your mentor, helping you along your degree path. Whether it is choosing the next course to take or talking you off the edge when you think it's too hard and that you couldn’t ever complete the course. They are the friendly voices reminding you the semester is almost over, and you have more than half a course to finish. They also celebrate your wins like they're their own. At times, I wonder who had more invested in graduating me or my coach.
Can you provide an example of how the program prepared you for challenges in your current role? Scholars without a doubt challenged me to look at my time management and reconsider how I prioritized tasks at hand. I had to relearn how to manage deadlines for Scholars, on top of everything happening in my personal and professional life. Fast forward to my current role, I constantly have new requests coming in and I have to manage my time to complete the tasks all while reevaluating what tasks are the most important. I find many days that list changes a few different times a day.
Describe how the program encouraged you to embrace innovation and adapt to new changes. If going back to school was not enough, doing it all online for the first time was new to me. I had done all my previous learning in person and was not the greatest student, so I was nervous about how I would succeed in the digital, self-paced classroom. I had to embrace the new learning platforms and quickly learn which ones I preferred over the others. To ensure I didn’t miss deadlines at the beginning of a class, I would put a calendar of tasks together, when they were due, and when I needed to start working on them to ensure I didn’t fall behind. This led me to adopt a similar approach to managing tasks at work and succeeding at meeting my professional deadlines.
How has the JetBlue Scholars program aligned with your long-term career aspirations? The JetBlue Scholars program aligned with my long-term career goals of moving up into a support center role where I could take years of operational experience and apply it to benefit other frontline crewmembers. I have been with JetBlue for 19 years now and want to continue impacting different parts of the company before I retire.
In what ways has the program fostered a culture of continuous improvement and learning in your team or department? Getting back into the formal education environment was the shock. I needed to remember how much I enjoyed learning. This has caused me to seek out other opportunities such as Project Management, Art of Facilitation, and a course on creating PowerPoint presentations.
